What Voters Need to Know
The May 2026 Shelby County primary is shaped by a crowded Democratic ballot, a much thinner Republican ballot, and several important countywide and district races that could be decided by turnout. This page is designed to help voters quickly see who is running, where the largest fields are, and which contests appear more open or more settled.
The Democratic side carries most of the competition in Shelby County this primary season. The ballot is packed with contested races for County Mayor, Sheriff, County Clerk, Criminal Court Clerk, County Trustee, and several County Commission and School Board seats. That means many voters will face crowded fields, especially in races where several candidates are competing for the same office.
On the Republican side, the ballot is much smaller. Several offices have only one qualified Republican candidate, while a number of others show no candidate qualified. Even so, Republican voters still have a few meaningful choices in races such as Sheriff and selected County Commission seats.
Most Watched Democratic Races
County Mayor, Sheriff, County Clerk, Criminal Court Clerk, County Commission District 7, County Commission District 9, School Board District 6, and School Board District 9 stand out because of either ballot size or public interest.
Republican Ballot Shape
Republicans have a smaller field with single-candidate races for County Mayor, Assessor of Property, County Clerk, and Criminal Court Clerk, plus a Sheriff race with two candidates and a handful of contested or filled commission seats.
Why This Primary Matters
In a low-turnout county primary, organized supporters and neighborhood engagement can make the difference. Crowded races may be won without a majority, which makes every vote and every precinct turnout effort important.
